I discovered Smith Island only today, but I've visited only through someone else! I bought a book, Martin Fletcher's 'Almost Heaven', in a charity shop in Oban, Scotland, where he describes his visit to Smith Island in 1997 or so. I was fascinated! I've only been to the States once, in 2006, and wish I'd known of it then when I spent time in Philadelphia and Washington. I'm looking forward to reading more about it!
